Sexy Bollywood film ads push boundaries

Posted in : Gossips, Movie News

(added a month ago!)

In case you missed it, sex sells. And Bollywood seems to be testing the old marketing ploy with a series of racy new promo posters that have raised more than a few eyebrows, among other things.

Sexy Bollywood film ads push boundaries

Since Charles Darwin sailed to the Galapagos Islands, it’s become apparent humans are basically machines bent on survival and reproduction – and these instincts can be subtly manipulated by savvy industrialists looking to unload everything from cheap watches and sunglasses to music and movies.

The promotional campaigns currently causing a stir in Bollywood are centered on three films: Hate Story, Jism 2, and Kyaa Super Kool Hain Hum. The posters, respectively, depict a topless mystery girl straddling a male actor, a nude woman lying outstretched under a wet and transparent sheet, and a barebacked beauty lying in the sand with a man’s hands all over her.

Risque stuff even for Western audiences, these images are quite scandalous for a culture that shied away from kissing scenes in their movies until just a decade ago.

Vivek Agnihotri who directed Hate Story, which is being touted as India’s first onscreen erotica, has emphatically denied exploiting sexuality to sell the film. “We are not using sex as a marketing tool for this film. We have made an erotic thriller, and we are marketing it as an erotica film,” he claimed.

Nevertheless, it has to be said the film is generating an awful lot of buzz thanks to the dare-to-bare scenes of Bengali actor Paoli Dam.

Kumar Mohan, a member of India’s Film Publicity Clearance Committee, maintains that all publicity materials related to the country’s film industry are checked prior to their release. However, he acquiesces, “sometimes, going by the content of the film, some bold posters have to be passed.”

Whether or not studios will effectively recover production costs by uncovering eager young actors remains to be seen. For those easily seduced by splashy ads and film propaganda, buyer’s remorse looms as an ever-present danger. After all, Bollywood is hardly the first industry to try and camouflage a mediocre product in seductive wrapping.

Answers to these gossip tidbits will be revealed on Mornings with Paras and Sharanya next week on RJ1200 at 1200AM: Why is Kangana trying to lose more weight ? Why does she need to get in an incredibly fit new avatar?

Madhuri Dixit has finally given the nod to her next big Bollywood comeback. But why are the makers of that film constantly on tenterhooks?

There is a reason why Shahrukh Khan has patched up with Farah Khan. . . . Find out the real cause next week!

Ileana may play Shahid's love interest in Vettai remakeMumbai: Shahid Kapoor will play one of the male leads in the Hindi remake of Tamil film Vettai but the problem is the female lead. According to reports, Amala Paul was the first choice for the role opposite Shahid but now it seems that Ileana d'Cruz looks like the new choice.

Ileana is shooting for Barfee with Ranbir Kapoor and Priyanka Chopra. She is also reportedly in the run to play the lead in Khiladi 786 with Akshay Kumar. If Ileana is finalized for this film, it will mark the third Hindi venture for the Goan beauty. The yet untitled film will be directed by Vettai maker Linguswamy under the banner of UTV Motion Pictures.

The shooting of the film will reportedly begin from the first week of May in Hyderabad. The original film had Arya and R Madhavan in the leads. Buzz is that Ali Zafar has been roped in to play the role essayed by Madhavan. However, reports say that Madhavan was approached to play his role in the Hindi version too but he had tom refuse due to injury. The action-packed film is the story of two brothers – one meek and the other strong. Sameera played the role of Madhavan's love interest.

Shah Rukh Khan detention saga Part II: My name is ... Kaun?

Shah Rukh Khan detention saga Part II: My name is ... Kaun?WASHINGTON: All the time, money, and effort that he expended in declaring "My name is Khan and I am not a terrorist" evidently had little impact on US airport officials. The Indian government on Friday intervened strongly on behalf of Bollywood icon Shah Rukh Khan after he was stopped for extended questioning by US airport authorities who, by the star's own account, "kick the star out of stardom."

The second episode involving Shah Rukh Khan vs US airport officials (the previous one was in 2009) went something like this: Khan arrived at White Plains Airport on a small private plane along with industrialist spouse Nita Ambani and some others en route to Yale University, where the Bollywood megastar was to receive a Chubb fellowship and deliver a speech.

While Ambani and others were cleared swiftly, Khan was reportedly stopped for extended questioning about his program. By Khan's own account, related in interactions with students when he finally reached Yale some three hours behind schedule, he was held back for 90 minutes. Others said it was two hours.

On the face of it, Khan appeared to take the episode in his stride and even joked about it, telling students "whenever I start feeling too arrogant, I take a trip to America." But his supporters and aides put a much more serious spin on it, saying the star was furious and it required the intervention of Yale authorities to expedite his release, although at no point was he considered under detention.

Khan also spoke snarkily about some of the off-the-cuff answers he gave authorities, flippantly underplaying the gravity of the episode which India's ministry of external affairs considered serious enough to intervene in.

External Affairs Minister SM Krishna is said to have asked Ambassador Nirupama Rao to take up the matter with the highest US. authorities. MEA sources (and not the minister himself) was quoted by wire services as saying, "Repeated problem for same person followed by clearance on account of consulate intervention and mechanical apology is not adequate."

The reference evidently was to a previous episode in 2009 when Khan was stopped for a similar length of time on arrival in America with questions about his program in the US, an incident which was followed by profuse US apologies, as was this one.

While that episode erupted into headline news based on exaggerated accounts of his "detention," US sources later told ToI that Bollywood stars and other Indian artists were under the scanner for financial transactions, including illegal cash payments, that some of them get through dodgy promoters.

At that time Khan had complained that "They were asking me silly questions like if I knew someone in the US. who could vouch for me, if I could give them numbers of people they could get in touch with." It turned out that they had a good reason to ask those questions.

There is also another American narrative: US officials privately say that many so called Indian elite have a sense of privilege which makes them think they are beyond scrutiny. They also blame the Indian media for exaggerated distorted accounts, including use of words such as "detention" and "strip search" where all that has happened is extended questioning or what they call "secondary inspection."

For instance, in this case, it was also not immediately cleared if Khan and others had arrived in White Plains on a domestic commuter charter after landing in JFK, in which case his international arrival would seem to have passed off without incident. Flying private charters if a name is already flagged would invite extra scrutiny.

Still, US officials reacted to New Delhi's complaints with the usual show of regret over the episode, leading MEA sources to dismiss it as part of a "mechanical response."

No one in US denies that airport officials are anything but mechanical -- and in their own eyes -- rule-bound, and overzealous. In the years before his death in 2009, Senator Ted Kennedy, one of America's most famous faces, was "detained" several times and not allwoed to board flights because his name matched an alias used by a suspected terrorist.

Things got so bad that Kennedy, in frustration, called a hearing of the Senate Judiciary Committee, in which he presented himself as witness and an "Exhibit A."

"Instead of acknowledging the craggy-faced, silver-haired septuagenarian as the Congressional leader whose face has flashed across the nation's television sets for decades, the airline agents acted as if they had stumbled across a fanatic who might blow up an American airplane. Mr Kennedy said they refused to give him his ticket," the New York Times reported about that hearing.

It continued: "He said, 'We can't give it to you,' " Mr Kennedy said, describing an encounter with an airline agent to the rapt audience. " 'You can't buy a ticket to go on the airline to Boston.' I said, 'Well, why not?' He said, 'We can't tell you.' "

"Tried to get on a plane back to Washington," Mr Kennedy continued. "'You can't get on the plane.' I went up to the desk and said, 'I've been getting on this plane, you know, for 42 years. Why can't I get on the plane?'"

The hearing room erupted in laughter."But for the Indian MEA and Shah Rukh Khan, it is no laughing matter.

Not first actor to show bare back: Paoli Dam

Posted in : Celebrity News

(added a month ago!)

Not first actor to show bare back: Paoli DamMumbai: Her bare back in ‘Hate Story’ poster and the explicit trailer have already ensured Paoli Dam a sensational debut in Bollywood but the Bengali beauty is not perturbed about being typecast as a sex symbol in the industry.

Dam says she does not find anything shocking in the content or her role of a revenge seeking woman in the Vikram Bhatt film. "As an actor, I feel boldness is just a mindset, It`s not just about wearing less clothes and showing your bare back on-screen. I am not the first one to do that. There are many actresses who did it before.

"I don`t think it will typecast me because I can`t repeat myself. I am an actress and it`s my job to bring out something new everytime. I don`t like my career to be monotonous. I am getting many offers of lead roles in Hindi films and they are completely different to what I have done in this film," Dam said.

The 32-year-old Bengali actor, who already has a body of work in Bengal after starting her career with Gautam Ghosh`s Kaalbela, says she decided to make her debut with Hate Story as it gave her enough scope to perform as a newcomer.

"I hadn`t thought of entering Bollywood before. I was quite content with the kind of Bengali films I was doing in Tollywood. But I chose this because I can`t say no to Vikram Bhatt. He is sensible director and a big name in the industry. I like the storyline and my character (Kavya) because as a performer I had enough scope to perform.

"It`s a multi-dimensional character. You get so many layers to perform in one character. It was a lucrative deal for me. I feel, getting a women-centric film as your launch veichle is a big thing. Moreover, the film has got good song and dance sequence to show my versatility," Dam said.

Directed by Vivek Agnihotri, the film revolves around the life of a female journalist who plots revenge against the man who ruined her life. The film releases on April 20. "Hate Story is not about nudity. It`s an emotional film. I play a girl who is like any other girl, who falls in love and in the quest of it she loses her job and motherhood and is ruined. The only option in her life is to take revenge," Dam added.

After working in Bengali and Hindi cinema, she feels Bollywood is more glamorous whereas Bengali cinema is culturally rooted. "Bollywood is more stylised and glamerise. Whereas Bengali cinema is more rooted to their culture and tradition. Bollywood is a brand itself because it is an amalgamation of all the cultures in our country," she said.

The actress is also shooting for a movie based on Rabindranath Tagore`s Ellar Charodhyaya, where she is playing Ella. The film is a period drama set in 1930.

Nathalia Kaur on her item number in Department (Watch Item Song)

“The music has a Marathi feel and is energetic. The dance steps are amazing too,” says Nathalia, adding “The song is about my character, who is powerful but doesn’t lose the sensuality of being a woman.  Though I am dancing with  many men, I’m also controlling them. The idea is that they all want me but they don’t dare come close.”She admits that choreographer Ganesh Acharya initially felt that she would not be able to pull off the routine, but he was pleasantly surprised later.

Kareena Kapoor signs Rs 5 crore endorsement deal

Posted in : Celebrity News

(added a month ago!)

Kareena Kapoor signs Rs 5 crore endorsement dealMumbai: If life gives you lemons, make lemonade. That seems to be Bebo’s recent mantra. The actress has just signed on a whopping deal with a lemonade brand, giving archrival Katrina Kaif (who endorses a mango drink) a run for her money.

We learnt that Bebo, who was the face of another popular cola company, lost no time after her current contract expired and grabbed another endorsement deal from a rival brand for apparently a whopping Rs 5 crore.

Queen of endorsements
Says a source, "Kareena now has 16 brands in her kitty including the latest one, easily making her the most sought-after face in the ad space amongst the actresses. 2011 was the year of big money for Kareena, thanks to her back-to-back hits."

Ever since she signed onto to Madhur Bhandarkar's 'Heroine', the actress's fat pay cheques have been grabbing headlines. She was apparently paid almost Rs 8 crore for the film, the highest for any actress in the Indian film space ever.

Clearly that has reflected on her choice of brands and the money she is charging for them as well. Adds the source, "Though Bebo has a lot of film commitments, she makes sure she gives enough time to her brands and hence charges as much."

Kareena was also spotted shooting for her very first commercial with the brand a few days ago at Brabourne studio in Mumbai. Adds the source, "Both Katrina and Asin who endorse soft drinks have had ads that have gained a lot of popularity. So Kareena and her team were insistent that the commercial must be catchy and entertaining." All Kareena had to say is — "I am not allowed to talk money!"

Rate card per endorsement (approx)
Katrina Kaif: Rs 4-4.5 crore
Priyanka Chopra: Rs 3-3.5 crore
Deepika Padukone: Rs 2-3 crore
Madhuri Dixit: Rs 1-2 crore
Vidya Balan: Rs 1-1.5 crore
Anushka Sharma: Rs 80 lakh

Sunny Leone still selling hard porn

Posted in : Celebrity News

(added a month ago!)

Sunny Leone still selling hard pornOnce a porn star, always a porn star! At least this stands true in Sunny Leone's case! One would think that after bagging a mainstream film like Jism 2, under Mahesh Bhatt's banner, Sunny would at least go easy on her porn star ways. But no! The lady has gone full throttle on making hay while sun shines and is selling her porn videos with nary a care for her newfound Hindi film star status.

"After Bigg Boss 5, Sunny Leone has become a household name in India and Asian subcontinent. And she seems to be reaping the benefits of this popularity by posting most daring videos on her website sunnyleone.com. This is really pathetic," says an industry insider on the condition of anonymity.

Sunny's website loudly claims: "All videos are now showing in HD format!" Obviously this goes on to increase the titillation quotient of her porn videos. And those who want to view her porn videos have to shell out 99 cents per day and those who want to buy them, have to shell out much more, depending upon the degree of hard porn shown.

After signing her debut Bollywood film, the lady has uploaded some xxx rated videos, with a tag line screaming : Watch Sunny Leone first time in B/G anal scenes!" This is setting a new trend in Bollywood for sure, which is not a very healthy one, adds our source.

I regret missing Bollywood films, says Kajal

Posted in : Celebrity News

(added a month ago!)

I regret missing Bollywood films, says KajalKajal Agarwal was the pretty face who lightened up the screen whenever Ajay Devgn and Rohit Shetty took respite from all the drama and 'dhoom dhadaaka' in last year's huge superhit SINGHAM. Though one would have expected Kajal to sign up newer projects in a jiffy, she decided to wait. Now that she is shooting for the Akshay Kumar starrer SPECIAL CHABBIS, Kajal is back in the reckoning as far as Bollywood is concerned.

She does regret the fact though that since in the year gone by she was quite busy shooting for her many films down South, she missed out on a few Hindi assignments. "It wasn't as if I was being all too choosy about Bollywood and hence not signing any newer projects.

However I had commitments down South that kept me engaged. In the process I did miss out on a couple of films due to date issues and honestly, I do regret that. Still, I couldn't help it since it was difficult to accommodate them all, especially when I was told that the films were to begin at a very short notice. I decided to wait before something good came my way and I had a breathing space before I said 'yes'. This is how SPECIAL CHABBIS happened. So I guess all is well that ends well," smiles Kajal. Well girl, we just hope that there indeed is a new beginning for you when SPECIAL CHABBIS hits the screen. With Akshay Kumar, Jimmy Sheirgill, Manoj Bajpayee and Anupam Kher in principal roles, the shooting of this Neeraj Pandey film is currently on and it may release before end of year.

'Housefull 2' is second biggest opener of 2012

Posted in : Movie News

(added a month ago!)

'Housefull 2' is second biggest opener of 2012With an opening weekend collection of Rs 43 crores, Sajid Khan's multi-starrer has opened big even in the IPL season. Call it Sajid Khan's confidence or arrogance, but his claims that his film Housefull 2 will be a blockbuster hit turned out to be true, like all his past claims. Despite releasing his film at the onset of IPL, Housefull 2 started on a very strong note and ensured houseful boards outside many cinema-halls. The film earned Rs 43 crores over its opening weekend. With this figure, Housefull 2 is the second biggest opening of the year after Agneepath. The multi-starrer managed to draw in audiences in vast numbers thereby assuring good business. What added to its advantage is that there was no other opposition to it at the box-office.

In that respect the film should have another decent week at the box office what with the competition being quite weak in comparison. The coming Friday sees the release of a low-budget Hindi-Marathi bilingual Chhodo Kal Ki Baatein (Kashala Udyachi Baat in Marathi) starring Anupam Kher and Sachin Khedekar in lead roles. The second release is Kumar Mangat's Bittoo Boss where he is trying to re-launch his daughter Amita Pathak after her past few failed attempts. The film introduces Pulkit Samrat as the male lead who starred in TV soaps some years back.
